Happy Hump Day Y’all!!

Wednesdays are hard. Everyday is hard. Adult life is the struggle life. That’s why today I’m talking FUEL!

There are 4 things I drink EVERYDAY to help power me through and KEEP TRUCKIN! And smiling! And exclaiming! On a Wednesday!

1. FIRST AND FOREMOST, my #1, BFF ride or die:

Black Coffee.

No surprises here. If you’re reading this and you haven’t had coffee today, I’m not sure I trust you. It’s life blood and I take it STRAIGHT UP.

“How do you drink it black? Gross”.. and the answer to that is I have no idea. It’s just how I like it and also happens to be the healthiest way to drink it, so I’d recommend it. It all started when I would go to visit my husband-then-boyfriend at his bachelor pad in North Carolina. I would visit at least one weekend a month, and learned that things like cream and sugar- not even to mention 0 cal sweetener- were not on a single man’s grocery list. So in those beginning stages of dating where all you want is to please the other person- I suffered down black coffee with him. Until it wasn’t suffering anymore. It was loving. BOOM. Find yourself a frugal man and let him change you.

COFFEE FUN FACT: did you know that blonde or “light” roast coffee actually has the MOST caffeine? The darker the roast of the beans, the longer they have been roasted which actually takes away the caffeine. So if you enjoy yourself a nice breakfast blend or Veranda at Starbucks- you’re getting a stronger caffeine boost than those brooding “dark roast” folks that hate themselves!

2. This one is going to strike you as double weird and “is she crazy?!

24oz Water mixed with 1 tbsp organic apple cider vinegar, twice a day.

This one took some getting used to, I am not going to lie. I will add in a squeeze of lemon and lime to trick my brain into thinking it’s just very acidic lemon-water. BUT OH THE BENEFITS. ACV is one of the healthiest things ever on the planet. Amen. I’ve been super into my gut-health lately, and tried a lot of probiotics and different remedies- but I never noticed any difference until I started gulping down the ACV. I started out trying to shoot it straight to get it over with- learn from my mistakes here- DO NOT TRY THIS. My throat burned for about 3 days straight and it singed off the top layer of mucosa on my esophagus, I’m pretty sure. Apple Cider Vinegar is so acidic- it will melt your teeth right out of your head. So don’t shoot it- dilute it! <<<impressed?!

3. PROTEIN SHAKES

All aboard the fitness journey express! As soon as I started tracking what I was eating and paying attention to the macronutrients in everything- I learned a simple fitness truth:

ITS ALL ABOUT THE PROTEIN.

And the hydration. And the exercise. BUT WE AREN’T TALKIN’ BOUT THAT MAYNARD!

Now protein shakes have been very trial and error for me. As my husband says, it is best to take your first drink of a protein shake with the mentality of THIS IS GONNA BLOW. And a lot of them do. But I will share with you my absolute all time favorite protein and the recipes behind them!

So. Dang. Good. Like Wendys Chocolate Frosty good. I mean it whole-heartedly. Here is your proof that I enjoy this supplement-

I MADE IT TO THE BOTTOM OF THE BUCKET.

I also add 1 scoop of collagen peptides- found on amazon. Another boost in health benefits! Beautiful hair, beautiful nail– like model or cheerleadah. And it’s flavorless!

I have tried a lot of protein shakes. Shakeology (whoa price tag), Orgain Organic Protein (OK), Vega Sport (Vegan protein- enough said), 1st Phorm (high-end but gross).

This UMP brand is delicious, the nutrition is great, and it’s SOLD ON AMAZON- so I don’t have to sign up with any consultant or pay for shipping. It’s a beautiful thing.

I also like to keep another flavor on hand in case I get tired of the chocolate one (I didn’t). So I purchased this vanilla protein from Walmart:

Ehh. It’s NOT BAD, but there’s definitely that protein TWANG that nothing seems to mask. BUT it came at a much cheaper price-point, I think I bought it for $17.. and nutrition is good here too!

I drink a protein shake after my lunch during the day or after my workout if I didn’t have time at lunch. I usually treat like a *dessert* that I don’t feel guilty about! RECIPES AT THE END OF PAGE.

4. PRE-WORKOUT

This one is a little controversial, as it may not be the healthiest thing in the world- but it helps get my rear in gear!

This brand is one of my FAVES, but I also ❤️LOVE❤️ the Spark drink sold by advocare consultants- I just haven’t had the pocket change lately to indulge in that one! So this is a close comparison.

This contains just a little boost of caffeine to push me through my workout. I will drink this when I get home from work and then head to the gym. I don’t take it EVERYday, but most days I do. If the thought of getting off the couch makes you want to cry, try some pre-workout. It will help.

**DISCLAIMER- not all pre-workout drinks are equal! A lot of them contain ingredients beta-alanine and Niacin which make you flush, itch, and tingle all over. Brands like C4 cellucor, this was the first I tried and absolutely hated it. I would suggest starting with a half scoop if you go this route and see how you react to it. It does deliver an energy boost- but with lots of weird side effects in my opinion.

PROTEIN SHAKE RECIPES:

For my shakes, I use a Ninja “single serve” blender and swear by it- you can use a regular blender or similar products like Nutri-bullet. Last resort here would be using a blender bottle and shaking with water- not fantastic.

Chocolate Shake

Fill ingredients into cup in this order:

  • 1/4 cup of ice (or more to your liking)
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened Almond Milk
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder

Blend all ingredients together until smooth.

Tuitti Fruitti Shake

  • 1/4 cup ice
  • 70g (use food scale- about 1/2 cup) frozen fruit of your choice- strawberry, peach, mango
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1/4 cup Trop 50 Orange juice
  • 1/2 cup Unsweetened Almond Milk
  • 1 scoop Vanilla Protein Powder

Blend all ingredients until smooth.

Orange Julius Caesar

  • 1/4 cup ice
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1 cup Trop 50 orange juice
  • Splash of water
  • 1 scoop Vanilla Protein

Blend until Smooth!
